A special birthday celebration

I’m not the kind of person who leaves things to the last minute. I like to stay organised and have specific schedules for the things I have to do.
But sometimes life gets in the way and when I notice it I'm right on top of the event. That’s what happened last weekend, on my better half’s birthday.

After Easter and some very busy weeks with lots of work, I realised I hadn’t had the time to get anything ready for the dinner party on Sunday. I left it until Saturday to buy his present and the supplies I needed for the party. I must say at this point I was starting to panic, thinking about how much I had to do in so little time.

I woke up early on Sunday to get the decoration ready. Yep, in this house any party has to have a special decor, for kids or grown-ups.
Of course things didn’t go to plan and my printer refused to cooperate. So I had to forget the nice printables I had designed the night before and go with a plan B. I reached for my crafts box, found some coloured papers and I improvised some little toothpick flags and a mini cake bunting. Done!

I’ve spent the afternoon in the kitchen, while he rearranged the living room, and I even attempted my first 2 layer cake while cooking for 10. It could have gone wrong, but as it turns out I did a pretty good job and the simple decoration turned out even better than I had imagined!

The main table, with a black tablecloth and pops of red (his favourite colour).

Appetizers and dips to start with.

No food labels? Write on the tablecloth!

It was a great night and everything was delicious!

Do you have a party coming soon and not much time to decorate? Follow these tips to recreate this party's look:

  • Pick a main colour and get essential props (like plates, cups, napkins and cutlery) in that colour, to set the theme. Disposable utensils will also make the after-party clean up a lot easier.

  • Use nice platters (white is always a good option) and display the food creatively.

  • Stretch a black plastic tablecloth over the table and secure it in place with tape. You can then use chalk to write on it, instead of using food labels.

  • Create a simple cake bunting using 2 straws, a piece of string and scrapbook paper.

  • Embellish toothpicks with small pieces of coloured paper and double-sided tape, to make little flags.

  • If you don't have a lot of time to cook, serve some "ready to eat" foods, like cheese and cold meats, chips, dips and crackers or store bought cakes and pasties.

Happy parties!

Valentine's Day Food

With Valentine's Day coming in just over a month, it's time to start thinking pink, red and hearts.
They say the way to a man's (or woman's) heart it's through his stomach...

Today I'll show you a few ways to say "I love you" with food. I know I wouldn't mind a heart-shaped bacon and eggs for a romantic breakfast!
Do you cook a special meal for Valentine's Day?

Herb infused Olive Oil

Another one of my home made gifts this year was a herb infused olive oil, great for salads and seasoning.
This was so easy to make and it turned out a beautiful little gift.

Start by finding some small glass bottles. I found mine at a dollar store and I loved the fact that their are appropriate for oils and dressings.

Remove any labels, wash and dry your bottles. It's very important to make sure they are completely dry before adding the oil, as any trace of water can cause bacteria to grow. You can place the bottles in the sun or leave them out overnight to allow all of the water to evaporate.

Select your herbs, wash them and dry them thoroughly. You can dry the herbs by leaving them in the sun for a few hours or heating them in the oven for a few minutes on low heat. Remember you need to eliminate all moisture before doing this mix, to avoid bacteria growth.

Lightly bruise the herbs to release flavour and place them in the bottom of the bottle. I chose oregano but you can use rosemary, thyme, or any any dried herbs you like. You can even mix a few different herbs and create a unique flavour.

Pour the olive oil over the herbs, filling the bottle close to the top.

Seal the bottle and store it in a cool, dry place for 1-2 weeks to infuse. The flavour of the oil will intensify over time.

If you use dried herbs, you can keep the mixture at room temperature and it will last for a few months. When using fresh herbs or moist ingredients (garlic, lemon, peppers), keep the infused olive oil in the fridge and use it within one week.

I finished my bottles with a small label that I glued to the bottle with double sided tape, and matching Christmas gift tags. The gift tags are available in my shop here.

Summer in Sydney

The weather has been humid and warm and the sun doesn't show up that often.
It's hard for me to accept that this is the Summer I'll get this year. In Portugal, were I came from, Summer started in June and lasted until September with beautiful sunny days and no sight of rain. Hopefully we'll have that kind of Summer here later on too. They say Summer is a bit late this year and it will probably last longer than usual. I can't wait to be able to go for a swim everyday after work, since I'm now living a few steps from the beach!

In the meantime, I'm taking conform in the flavours of the season. There's so many beautiful fresh fruit in the markets now, and cheaper than ever!

So for now I'll get my inspiration from all the colours and flavours that surround me. I'm working on some Valentine's Day goodies that should be in store very soon. Stay tuned!
